Frederick, MD. A reported One Hundred Forty Million Americans went shopping on Friday after Thanksgiving. Some area stores were also open on Thanksgiving day. Frederick area residents appeared to have participated in the Black Friday shopping.
Alex at the K-Mart on the Golden Mile, Route 40, said at 10:50 a.m. that K-Mart had definitely seen more customers this year as compared to last Black Friday. The difference was in the type of shopper. Last year, area retailer employees reported, more shoppers came early in the morning to take advantage of “doorbuster” deals, but this year more shoppers came out regularly throughout the day, creating a steady flow of shoppers throughout the early afternoon. Alex at K-Mart and Mike at Sears, both employees of the respective electronics departments, reported that there were less shoppers in the early morning hours, but a steady flow of customers throughout the day. Low price electronic items did sell out in both stores. If we continue comparing electronics departments, Eddie, the manager of Boscov’s electronics department, said that he had not seen as many customers in his department as he had expected, but that overall the Frederick Towne Mall retailer had seen a steady flow of customers this year and that overall Boscov’s had done more than 10% more in business this year than last year. He commented that he did not understand why The Bon Ton, in the same mall, was closing citing a lack of sales since Boscov’s was doing just fine in its location. A trip down the hall of the Frederick Towne Mall to The Bon Ton store also made one wonder how The Bon Ton could claim that the location was not doing well. The Bon Ton’s midday customer count appeared to be very high. A The Bon ton employee, who asked not to be identified by name, said that business at the soon-to-close store had been extremely busy throughout the day and that official justifications for the store’s closing were inaccurate. The employee who asked to remain anonymous said that sales had been good throughtout the year and the real reason the store is closing is its location. She also reported that many of their most loyal, and elderly, customers have been coming into the store this year in tears because they do not want to shop in the FSK mall. The store was extremely busy on both sides of the hallway at the mall.
Mike at Sears reported that the store had been extremely busy on Thanksgiving morning, closing at noon on the holiday. He said that at noon the store was extremely crowded and the customers were sad to be sent home to allow the employees to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner with their families. The FSK mall was packed even in the late afternoon. jcPenney employees said they had been busy all day. Even employees of Burlington Coat Factory claimed that they had been busier than last year.
